Use this website to research and make your own unique artist's notebook, inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels.
The Lindisfarne Gospels were created in Northumberland almost 1300 years ago. For Christians, they contain God's message. For people of all faiths, and none, it is a magnificent object. It is a celebration of word, time and place.
You don't need to know the gospels or be a great artist to take part! You just need time, an open mind, and a willingness to research, experiment and explore.

About this site:
This site is a resource to help you create a 'Research Book'. Artist and writers have long used research books as a way to collect and explore ideas. The site suggests ways to make and bind a simple book. There are also projects, approaches and activities to fill your book. The site has four themes - object, time, place, word. Each is connected to one of the four gospel authors. You can download images from this site to use in your own work. You will also find links to other sites and resources if you want to deepen your research.

About the Lindisfarne Gospels:
The Lindisfarne Gospels is a one-off, handwritten book created on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in Northumberland, North East England. It is large and heavy, and includes beautiful pages of symmetrical patterns and decorated letters. It is likely that one man, Eadfrith, wrote and decorated the book. It was a huge project. Eadfrith started in about the year 715 AD and worked on the book regularly until he died six years later, in 721. This could be why some of the decoration is not quite finished! Eadfrith simply ran out of time. The great age and the artistic skill of this book make it interesting to many people, of all ages and backgrounds.
